Where to drink

Going for a drink in Crete is easy and you will be spoiled for choice because there are so many tavernas.
The taverna is the focal point in every village in Crete and you will be warmly welcomed in whichever one you choose.
What to drink is a different matter, but here is a list of the wine that can be found on Crete.
What to drink....

Retsina - white wine flavoured with pine resin, an excellent accompaniment to Cretan food, even though it is not a Cretan wine.
Some rural restaurants serve their own delicious home-made wine, drawing it directly from huge wooden barrels.
Botled wines include Cava d'or, Olympias, Gorthys, Tsantalia and Calliga, all of which are avaiable in red, white or rose' versions.
Cretan wine makers distil delicious raki, a clear brandy-like liquor, from the grape pips and skins left over from the wine making process.
An ouzeri, similar to a tradtional cafe ( kafenion ), serves the aniseed-flavoured aperitif known as ouzo, usually with little dishes of olives, fried potatoes or beans as an accompaniment.

The Cretan word for 'cheers' is yammas and 'your health' is stin yassas

DON'T DRINK & DRIVE - the Cretan Police take a dim view of drunk drivers.
