Driving in Crete
If you want to see the island of Crete at your own pace, explore on your own and find those little villages where the tour buses don't take you, then the ideal
way to do is by hiring a car, although it has to be said that driving in Crete is not for the faint hearted.
The island of Crete is only 176 kilometres long but don't think that you can drive round the island in a day, you can't. The roads in Crete are by no means motorways.
The only really good road 'fast' is the 'National Highway' which runs along the north coast the island. Off the main road be prepared for the odd sheep or goat in the middle of the road and if you manage to avoid those, keep an eye out for the holes.
Hiring a car, motorcycle or scooter is easy with more hire firms to the square miles than fish and chip shops in Blackpool. Your tour Rep should be able to give you the names of a few reputable local firms.
Depending on your needs, the car hire firms are willing to hire for periods of one, two or three days or by the week. Cars are classed by size :
Class A ( Small cars such as - Fiat Panda, Suzuki Swift )
Class B ( Small family cars such as - Ford Fiesta, Citreon Saxo )
Class C ( Large family cars such as - Opel Kadett, Nissan Almera )
Class D ( Open topped cars such as Suzuki Samara, Vitari )
Costs vary through the season, with the highest rental being in the months of July, August and September.
When hiring any form of transportation be sure that you are covered by CDW ( Collision Damage Waiver ) insurance, which is like our 'Fully Comprehensive'.
If you fail to get the correct cover, you may find yourself having to pay for any damage to the hire car.
