Ron's Second Visit
My second visit to Crete was just under two from my first visit and again we had booked a hotel in Agios Nikolaos. The bus had pulled up on the promenade to let off two Scots girls and we watched as they lugged their suitcases up the many steps to their hotel. I remember smiling and thinking that I was glad that I wouldn't have to do that. How wrong can you be ?
We had booked the Hotel Zena for our honeymoon because we knew where it was, or so we thought. The bus went round the block and dropped us off at our roadside hotel. It was then that we discovered that the entrance wasn't on the roadside but up 38 steps and then to cap it all, the hotel didn't have a lift and our room was one the second floor. It was 5.30am and it was a long journey up those stairs.
We got up the first morning and wandered downstair for breakfast to be met by George ( A giant of a man, in shorts and flip-flops ), after which we wandered down in the town and got our bearings.
The 'Welcome meeting' was at 4.00pm in a place called 'Jimmy's Bar' which we knew was on the way the Town Beach. When we entered our courier from the previous night greeted us and apologised for the way she acted at the airport. ( We had exited the airport and approached our 'rep'. When she asked my name she looked very confused, but told us to get on bus number 5. There was a delay and I got off the bus for a quick cigarette with a guy who was sitting opposite me on the bus. ) Then the courier said "Mr Greenfield, meet Mr Greenfield" and there was the guy I'd been smoking with earlier that morning. Same name from the same part of Yorkshire but not related. We had a few beers together and sat and listened to the presentation from our travel reps.
