Ron on Knossos
An old relic and behind that is part of the Knossos Palace | |
My first visit to Knossos was in 2000, I had been to Crete 17 times and had put going off as a 'tourist thing', but to my surprise I found it fascinating.
We had been advised to hire one of the many Knossos Official Guides to take us round the site, and after paying our entrance fee we were approached by a small lady called Marina.
She explained in very good English, that she was just about to take an English party around the palace and we could join it for 1500 drachmas ( about £3.00 ).
When Marina had gathered us around her, she stuck a small green sticker on each of us so that she would know we were in her party. Then she put up her parasol, turned on her heal saying "follow me" and we set off to discover Knossos.
|
Upon entering the site, Marina stopped and told us all to look at a mountain that was 9 kilometres away, telling us that she would explain later why we had to look at it.
Which she did by showing us three lengths of pipe that carried water from the mountain to Knossos in 4000BC.
And Greek plumbing hasn't shown any improvement since that day.

I found the whole site fascinating and having a guide made it easy, if you wanted to know anything all you had to do was ask.
I will return to Knossos for further exploration, but I will make sure that I do it on a cooler day, we almost fried the day we went.
